The below is from a soon-to-be published article I wrote on
this very topic...
>From one who has tried every one of these programs as part
of my livlihood, I can tell you with 100% confidence that
the best way to use auto-submission tools, be they software
or Web sites, is NOT AT ALL, or only for locating the places
you then can submit to manually. The search engines and
directories each built a submission form for you to use, so
use it. Yes it takes longer, but the truth is the sense of
confidence you will have will be much higher.
Search engines have a love/hate relationship with these
tools. I know this from interviewing folks at the search
engines for a column I do for Ad Age Magazine. Yes, they
get a lot of submissions through them, but they also get a
lot of people who spam them over and over, and others who
simply don't send submissions correctly, and have to do them
over and over. And remember you ARE NOT using the actual
search engines submission form when you use an auto
submitter, you are using a series of scripts that pass
information *to* the form, and that means error
possibilities increase with every additional search engine
and directory they try and submit to, and the more complex
the the submission site, the more opportuniites for mistakes
to occur. I have so many clients who tried an
auto-submitter and now pay me to clean up the mess that it's
sad...
Note also that even the best multi-submitters do not handle
multipart submission forms, either, and multipage submission
forms are often some of the most valuable submission sites
out there...
Another reason why you shouldn't use them is more about
decency. If all you do is use an autosubmitter, aren't you
really saying that you could give a damn about the search
engine and directory, except for their submission form? And
actually, you don't even care about the submission form, but
rather the auto-submitters form.
Also, if you have put a serious investment into building a
Web presence, why in the world would you short-cut the most
crucial aspect of the whole process, awareness-building? My
advice is to use them only as spotters for submission sites,
and then go the the actual search engine, study it, learn
how it works, what it's about, what they do and don't do,
and then submit to them, using the form they ask you to use.
And one final note: Infoseek has a disclaimer on their site
that plainly states that they reserve the right to refuse
any submission made from an auto submitter. This does not
mean they *do* disallow them, but it darn sure says to me
something is up, or there wouldn't be a disclaimer at
all...
Good luck!
