Funny you should ask. We just completed a test with search engines. We
use a couple of multiple-submission services like Broadcaster (free to 200+
engines), Submit-it, Postmaster 2, Exploit (200+ engines) and some smaller
ones. We created two sites for our Automated Press Releases and submitted
one to the search engines using Broadcaster and Postmaster 2. Broadcaster
will go to 200 search engines, and in our case they reached 125.
Postmaster 2 only goes to 20 (for free) and they said it went to all.

With the second version of Automated Press Releases we sent out e-mail to
folks who visited our sites in the past, and to some of the newslists who
helped us develop the concepts for the sites. We did not submit this one
to the search engines.

The results after one week: 24 visitors on the search engine version; 997
visitors on the other one. IMHO search engines are good, but not the
panacea. They are like a gigantic Yellow Page directory. I don't know
about you, but I don't remember getting a lot of business from the Yellow
Pages (non-Internet). However, we do get a lot of business from referrals.

BTW, we discontinued the search engine part of the Automated Press
Releases, and just continued with http://www.gapent.com/pr/
