While I appreciate the comments of Eric Ward and John about not using
auto-submitters, I have to defend Submit-It! just a little bit here (the
site that was mentioned in the original post on this subject) as well as
the individuals who take advantage this service. I have used Submit-It!
recently and only about 10-15 of the *general* search engines listed may
be submitted completely automatically (and you always have the option of
one-by-one). For the general directories and all other specific
directories, the user must submit his/her information one-by-one,
customizing it as necessary.

For each directory that the user selects, a screen is accessed with general
information about the directory, including its purpose and intent. I
originally clicked on all the directories in the "general business"
category to submit my commercial URL. However, when I got to some of these
it was obvious from the information provided that it was not appropriate
for my site, so I clicked the "Skip It" button.

The time-saving factor of Submit-It! comes with not having to retype (or
cut and paste) identical information more than once, and not having to
access the individual URL of each search engine and directory. Submit-It!
provides a very good service for individuals with limited time, and I don't
think the service they provide is insulting to the hard-working people who
maintain the search engines and directories.

I think what is most important is how responsibly individuals decide to act
when they avail themselves of a service like Submit-It!
