I must have missed the original post, but I'd like to throw in my .02.

I'm a dedicated Do It Yourself type. Probably because I have a
negligible capital base. I run two lists using Pegasus Mail, which is
a freeware mail package.

I've set up a POP account at my web host for each list. Every day I
download the messages which Pegasus filters into the appropriate
mail folders. Then I run a quick batch of filters on each of the
folder contents... People are subscribed or unsubscribed as requested.
On top of that an e-mail is generated to each to let them know their
request has been completed successfully.

When it comes time to send the mass mailing, I just put the list name
in the To: field, put the newsletter in the body, and send it off. It
takes about an hour to actually send the message (through AT&T
Worldnet), but I just do other things while it's sending.

My lists have subscriberships of 2450 and 4500. Here's a few points to
consider...

You can only subscribe the 'from" or "reply to" addresses. This may be
troublesome if someone asks you to subscibe an address other than the
one they're sending the request from, but I consider it a good thing
because it helps reduce malicious subscriptions (people subscribing
others without their permission).

The address on an unsubscribe request must match the address on the
list exactly. If someone is subscribed as "bob_at_mail.generic.com" and
then sends the unsubscribe request as "bob_at_generic.com," he won't be
unsubscribed.

Because Pegasus is freeware, there's no real tech support, but there
are lots of "power users" like me who are happy to help others with the
ins and outs. If you're looking for a mailing list solution that's
free, you might want to consider it.
