After reading comments about some ads for the
"Men's Health" web site on ChannelSeven today,
I spent a while exploring the site at
http://www.menshealth.com/
While surfing, I saw an ad on the site which I wanted
to select. But the site uses "ad flipping," in which ads
were rotated and replaced in the ad frame while I was
still reading the main frame. As a result, the ad I
wanted disappeared before I could click it, and I was
given no way to navigate back to the ad I wanted
to click on.
Now, I have a number of navigational complaints
about the site (which I personally think is poorly
designed, with no way to deduce or even make an
educated guess about what is available from most
links), but the notion that someone who WANTS
to access an advertiser's link is UNABLE to do so
because of this "ad flipping" is very, very disturbing
to me as an advertiser on the internet.
Indeed, my prior "reluctance" to pay for advertising
on sites that utilize "ad flipping" has now been
supplanted by an absolute belief that "ad flipping" is
simply NOT an acceptable form of ad display,
unless accompanied by a navigation mechanism to
return to prior ads. (I had been planning to try a
test run for one month on a local site that uses
"ad flipping," but I no longer consider that a wise
use of my money.)
And yes, I tried the option of waiting a few minutes
while more ads flipped in, but the ad I wanted did
NOT reappear.
