Throughout the Web I have found many sites that use meta refresh commands
to rotate their banners. Most are set up so that the ads rotate once every
30 seconds. I have never had a problem with this because if I have not
seen the ad and decided to click on it within a 30 second interval, what
are the odds I ever will? Probably not too good.

For anyone who enjoys research and has little to do, this would make a
great project. What happens to the effectiveness of a banner from the
second it downloads until the user moves on? Which ten second interval is
the most effective in generating click through's? At what point does the
possibility of click through start to decline and when is there almost no
hope? These are very important questions.

I have seen too many sites that rotate banners every five or ten seconds.
I can not imagine this is fair to the advertiser. It must also inflate the
number of page views a site receives by more that fifty percent. Until the
questions I have listed above are answered, I think the best way to go
about deciding what time interval to set your meta refresh commands at, is
to find out how much time on average a user spends on a single page within
your site. If the average is fifty seconds than maybe that is where the
meta refresh should be set.

My advice is only for publishers that have already created their sites with
the meta refresh command. If you are just starting out, try and rotate the
banners without using it first. If you feel that your content is keeping
people on the same page for long periods of time, than I may recommend
using the meta refresh. Just try and be realistic in determining the time
interval to set it at.
