At 12:17 PM -0800 11/6/1997, Greg Bulmash made this statement of rare insight:

This isn't an absolute truth. It really depends on what your site does/is
for and what kind of visitors you're trying to attract. For example:

*Some people avoid sites with bandwidth-intensive features, unless those
features offer something of real value _to them_ beyond being just neat and
cool. If you have a slower connection or an older, slower computer, you
tend to stay away from places that take forever to load, crash your machine
or cause other problems.

*A content-driven site doesn't necessarily need a lot of anything beyond
good content to be successful. In fact, bandwidth-intensive "features" may
actually detract from the value of the site for some people. (See above
paragraph.) Even people who like the fun stuff may not want it when they're
out looking for information, rather than looking for entertainment.

Also, I'm a little confused by the idea, implict in the quoted paragraph,
that "attracting and bring-backing visitors" won't "increase page views or
ad views". If you have more people coming and coming back to your site, how
can you NOT increase page views and ad views? Am I over-looking something
obvious?
