I'd like to add one more caveat to the presumption that contests increase
traffic. We provide technical consulting and hosting for a new media
company that ran a contest for one of its clients. The site was housed on
our server, so I was able to see the traffic reports. It was clear that
traffic did increase during the contest period. However, many visitors
seemed to just go to the contest entry page, fill it out and then leave.
In fact, some of the site's biggest referrers during the contest run were
contest directories. But the directories just linked to the entry page, not
to the main page. Such directories can easily turn into just an efficient
way for contest freaks to find and enter lots of contests.
I am now convinced that unless you consider this mentality when designing
and promoting a contest, all you will get is a bunch of unqualified
visitors filling out your entry page. Unless they actually go into your
site, the traffic increase is of little value.
