I'd like to correct the above statement with regards to what CitySearch
does and how we do it. First, we are not a Yellow Pages (glorified or
otherwise). CitySearch is an online guide; part directory, part savvy
editorial, part advertising. We offer a huge range of listings,
reviews, articles, suggestions and recommendations. The last time I
checked, my yellow pages didn't offer me a review of the newest
restaurants, tell me where the best sample sales are this week, where I
could volunteer on Thanksgiving Day, who was on at the jazz clubs, where
I should take my kids, what's fresh at the greenmarkets and a myriad
number of other things. If nothing else, check out our articles section
http://www.newyork.citysearch.com/E/F/NYCNY/0010/00/02/ I'm also
unaware of a Yellow Pages receiving recognition and kudos from
publications like the New York Times, USA Today, PC Magazine, _at_NY, and
the New York Post.
Second, we do not sell links. We sell customized websites to local
businesses - businesses like the Four Seasons Restaurant,
Cafe Luxembourg, the Peninsula Hotel, Rothmans's Clothing, Tower
Records, etc. Businesses that buy sites with CitySearch are integrated
into relevant editorial sections to make the site most meaningful and
relevant to our users. If, for example, you're looking for the newest
place to eat, our restaurant section contains reviews, listings and
restaurant sites; the latter of which is paid advertising (and clearly
indicated) . Businesses that buy sites with CitySearch can also link
out to their external or corporate sites. Why do they buy sites with
CitySearch if they already have a website? Because they recognize the
value of the traffic we get and the value of our audience.
Hope this clarifies.
