I have seen couponing done poorly by some local resturaunts. Basically it
was a simple "print this and get $5.00 off lunch or dinner" form. They got
one during the month.

I think the campaign failed because they did nothing to promote the
campaign. There were no links or ads placed on other popular local sites.
In fact, they placed ads on local radio stations then failed to ask for a
link from the stations site. Moreover, this resturaunt relied heavily on
the horse racing crowd from Saratoga. There was no effort to attract people
who were coming to Saratoga on vacation. Even the Meta keywords failed to
mention Saratoga.

If the goal is to get people to enter your location I think that coupons on
the web might work with some restrictions (e.g. one discount per visit) so
long as you build traffic through your site using the methods we all know.
