The Auto Channel (www.theautochannel.com) has been running TV commercial on
its site for nearly a year, and it didn't even require special technology
from EchoMedia..
We've been using TV commercials 3 ways: as stand-alone content elements; by
inserting them into our live video cybercasts (i.e. our coverage of the
Indianapolis 500); and by editing them into some of our archived streaming
video programs. To insert the TV spots into our live video coverage, we use
the same technique we've used in broadcast TV applications: we roll the spot
from a seperate VCR and use a video switcher to switch from the live camera
signal to the VCR. We've now done a few dozen live video cybercasts and
currently have over 400 streaming video programs on our site, some as long
as 1 to 2 hours. Therefore, we've obviously had some pretty extensive
experience using video and TV commercials.
The reason for doing this is to add variety and depth to the manner in which
we can provide advertising exposure for our clients. We use VXtreme as our
streaming video technology, which we found to be superior to RealVideo,
VDOLive, and Xing's StreamWorks.
>From a statistical results standpoint it's hard to quantify the success of
the TV spots. Our numbers in general continue to grow, and when we promote
or feature a graphic icon that links to our "stand-alone" TV commercials
they get a reasonable share of clicks. When we've incorporated the TV spots
into our live or archived video programs we've had no complaints from either
internet users or our advertisers. Anecdotal evidence suggests that people
find it "cool". We believe this capability will become increasingly
important as more people add streaming video plug-ins and as Microsoft
develops a "standard" streaming video platform.
Examples of stand-alone commercials and video programs with incorporated TV
spots can be found on The Auto Channel at:

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/events/indy500_97/ and then click on

Of course, you'll need the VXtreme plug-in to view the videos
(www.vxtreme.com).
