I can only speak for my site, but the majority of our traffic has come
from search engines and links form other sites. However, I'm starting to
see more come from other areas. This all makes total sense, because we
did not invest in any advertising. We notified the search engines and
other sites (Keep in mind that we have valuable content and are not a
company/product marketing site). And don't get me wrong, if I had the
budget I would surely put some into print and internet advertising.

Over the past year we have attended a number of trade show/conventions
and had a number of articles written about us and go figure traffic is
starting to come from (and I base this on a survey in which we list most
logical choices for where they heard of us), print articles,
demonstrations and refered by colegue.

I guess the answer to your question is that any of the areas of
promotion a specific site use, will most likely affect that sites
traffic in regard to that source. For those that do nothing, I would
have to guess that theeir traffic would come form search engines first
then links form other sites.
