I recall hours of anguish debating if we should deploy some key graphics
as jpegs as they where MUCH smaller than the gif versions. This was in the
days when only a few browsers supported jpegs.

All techniques that you use on a site must be applicable to the viewers.
Very few sites have a mass demographic appeal, even sites like CNET do not,
now, before
someone emails me back disagreeing with me, I cant think of a single site
that both of my parents and myself would be interested in...

Now, we can all comment about VRML, Flash, video, etc but only the person
creating (and the person paying, if different) can judge whats the best
way to display the desired message.
