At 4:43 PM -0700 10/7/97, Steven Heath made this statement of rare insight:

This is very true, but..

1. Just because a site appeals to a small, specific demographic doesn't
necessarily mean that everyone in that small group has the same computers,
browers, and browsing habits. If you want to reach as many people as
possible, you may still need to take into consideration people with less
than the latest equipment. (In fact, the argument could be made that since
the actual number of people who will be interested in your site/your ad is
a relatively limited number, that it's even more important to make sure
your message gets to everyone!)

This isn't to say don't use VRML, Flash, and so on, but to make sure there
are alternatives for people who can't or don't want to see them.

2. Sometimes the people who make/pay for the site want to add bells and
whistles because they can, and not for any good reason. And sometimes they
don't take into consideration the fact that using the lastest thing may
shut out a portion of their audience. Yes, it's their decision and they are
the best ones to judge, but they need to base that decision on more than a
desire to have a cool site.

On a related, but side note, I went to look for more VRML plugins a week or
two ago, when this discussion started, including the Cosmo player. At that
time, I could find no VRML 2 browers or plugins for a 68040 Mac -- all I
found were for Power Macs. Does anyone know where I could get one?

Now granted, all the new Macs are Power Macs, but there are a lot of us out
here still using older models (and a lot of models even less powerful than
mine). Plus, people who can't afford (or don't want to spend the money on)
new computers will get them second hand, and these will generally be older
models. So, depending on who you want to reach, you may need to take this
into consideration.
