You are right to be cautious. Journalists will not welcome the kind of
"push" that a big PR firm has in mind. However it could work if:

1. It is not too invasive, and

2. There is a high volume of (suitably indexed / digested) information
of relevance to the audience and properly archived.

I am currently developing a "push" press release channel aimed at UK
journalists - but using the old-fashioned kind of push (email). I would
be happy to compare notes.
