This holds a hidden assumption...that profiling can only be controlled
and used by the vendor or advertiser. What if individuals could pool
their profiles and use them to negotiate better deals? If this were the
case then I think individuals would gladly use profiling. They could
protect their privacy and get more value all in one.

We (http://dataSpace.net/index.cgi?oa001-97) are trying to create a
service that puts the individual in charge of their own Personal Data.
After all if so many people believe that information ABOUT YOU is
valuable, then why shouldn't you use state-of-the-art tools to make sure
some of that value goes directly TO YOU!

When someone gathers information about you and you feel that you
recieved something of equal worth in exchange, then that is a fair
trade. When they gather it without you knowing it is theft.

What we need is a better set of tools and vocabulary for valuing and
tracking personal information. It is obvious that marketers are going
to make these tools better for themselves. Now I think it is time for
the individual to improve their own.

What if we could take it further. Imagine a system where people
actively seek vendors or products. A system where individuals
co-operate together to get the benefits of group buying. A system full
of active consumers, not just passive receptors.

I'd like to hear YOUR thoughts on this topic...
