I was curious about this as well.

I went to Yahoo, Excite, AltaVista and Infoseek to see what was going on
and searched by obvious "sex" key words.

Yahoo and Excite both displayed "porn site" ads while the others did not.
In fact it took me many times to get an ad other than a Digital ad
from AltaVista (low sales?)

I find the "search" sites that do accept this to be in a very tough
position. If they do accept these keywords buys are they endorsing the
content of these site. Are they liable if the ads are obcene in the US
or any other country? Canada for one has much stricter laws in this area
than US does. (side note: Yahoo Canada (www.yahoo.ca) does not even
display ads in the search results page)

A "public" site with a large marketing budget promoting themselves and
being one of the strongest brands on the Internet means you have to think
about more than just money and also more than just "hey, we just run the
ad, not the XYZ site".

I can just imagine USA Today tomorrow:

"Yahoo shows kids how to find porn on the Internet"
