Hello...

I don't have a problem with the search engines and directories
selling their sex keywords to porn companies. I was curious,
however, to find out how well they screened the banners
they were running. I would have an objection to people being
exposed to content that they did not wish (or were not supposed)
to see.

An obvious search term to use would be "sex," right? But what
about "sex education?" Take a parent or student, for example,
doing a search for educational material on the birds and the
bees. There is a good chance that they don't want to see porn
banners and links to XXX sites. I did a quick search on both
sex education and "sex education" (with and without quotes).
Here is what I found:

-- Yahoo, Lycos, WebCrawler, Infoseek, and AltaVista all
returned sex education-related articles with non-adult-oriented
banner ads.

-- Excite came up with sex education-related links, but
did show an adult-oriented banner.

-- HotBot not only came up with links to adult-oriented sites,
but also showed a pornographic banner as well.

I have to admit that I was surprised that five of the top
seven search engines screened their keywords so well. Good
for them! The results do, however, make a strong argument for
the legitimacy of this type of advertising.

Thanks,
Gordy Seeley
