Actually, such a system does indeed exist. I learned about it while
working in the communications division at Digital Equipment Corp.
However, when I visited DEC's web site, I couldn't find any information
about it. The software program was designed to be ported onto Digital
UNIX web servers and could collect subscription-based web sites in
increments as small as half a cent per transaction.
The program is called Millicent. As I said, I couldn't find the info on
DEC's web site, so it's possible it's a third-party program. Does anyone
else have any info on it? I *think* that I learned about it while
preparing for the fall 1996 ComDex, but it may have been that year's
Decus.
Sorry I don't have more information, but hopefully this will spark
someone else's memory.
