Hi Richard and fellow list members.
Last sunday, I've received the results of a major survey on the
profile of the brazilian Internet user: the Second Cade?/Ibope
Internet Survey. 25,316 users responded to this survey. Other
sources estimated the number of brazilian internet users to
be arround 1 Million. Since the results of this survey are not
yet available in english and because of the importance of this
report to anyone targeting a brazilian Internet audience, I took
the liberty of translating and making them available to you and
our fellow list members.
Bellow you can find the Introduction to the report. Anyone
interested on receiving the full free report (26k), please feel
free to request it by emailing me to mailto:tmdesign_at_esoterica.pt

PROFILE OF THE BRAZILIAN INTERNET USER - AUGUST 1997
INTRODUCTION
The results from the second Cade?/Ibope Survey were, in general,
fairly consistent with the results from last yearís survey
(November 1996). Nevertheless, some trends revealed by this
yearís survey deserve to be highlighted, the main one being,
without a doubt, the increased participation of women on the
Internet, from 17% last year to 25% in this survey. There was
also a slight decrease in the percentage of users who speak
English: now they comprise 58% of users, against 62% revealed in
the first survey. This fact was somewhat predictable, since the
Brazilian Internet offers a fairly large number of sites in
Portuguese. For example, at the time of the first survey, in
November 1996, Cade? (one of the most popular Brazilian search
engines) had 12,000 sites catalogued. Today, this has increased
to over 36,000. The growth of Internet use among Brazilian
companies can also be noted on this second survey, by
considering:
* the increase in the number of users that have access to
the ëNet from their workplace
* the increase in the number of employees in relation to
employers
* the decrease in the percentage of people employed in
Information Technology, in favor of other fields
* the increase in the number of users per computer.
Evolution of the profile:
