I'm in the midst of planning banner ad buys for third quarter, and
assessing the difference between standard rate card ad rates vs. "street
rates". In comparing rates at major search engine/directories/portals ,
I see that the going CPM hovers around $20 per general rotation banners,
then increases to $30 CPM for category runs and $50 for Keyword banners.

Ok, so those are the standard market quotes...how does one smaller site
acquire a "street rate" other than purchasing consecutive monthly runs,
which are also rate-carded? Is there any protocol to proposing and/or
acquiring street rates? A system similar to traditional media
advertising comes to mind, where rate cards are simply a front, or
industry yardstick, for the actual rates advertisers pay out. If the
later is the case, what experience have you had at discounted levels?
