The linking issue is one that each web site must consider in what their
objective is, but for us the decision was to not link out.

In our case, the World of Fishing web site (http://www.fishingworld.com)
was established as a final destination, and not as a directory of other web
sites. We devote hundreds of hours of work each month to put up news and
other content on a continuing basis and this is what our visitors come to
view. For the market segment interested in fishing, we are like the CNN of
fishing news, as we are the place to get daily results of many of the
fishing tournaments across the USA.

Also from the time we first started (May '95) we made a committment to our
advertisers that we would not send their customers away from our site by
linking out to external web locations. This has been important to our
advertisers and I think it has helped us get their business. It would
certainly not be fair to our advertisers, after they paid good money to be
hosted on our web site so they can share in our high traffic, for us to
send their customers away by linking out.

This also means that we market our services as selling and designing web
pages instead of trying to sell banner ads. Since we are appealing to a
specific market niche, the advertisers web pages also become part of the
interesting content on our site.

This approach may not work for everyone, but it is a working model for a
site that provides a high degree of content to a targeted market.
