The origins of the net lie within an ultra-libertarian subculture of
academicians who despise the commercialization of the internet and rampant
technological innovations spawned by corporate needs. I like to refer to
those who retain a degree of this mind-set as "internetophiles."

There has been a steady decline in staunch internetophiles for the past
year or so. However, there remains a streak of the basic mind-set in many
avid internet users. Viscous responses of this type to spam (whether
intended or presumed) and other commercial intrusions is a fact of life on
the internet.

We recently had a vicious encounter with the holder of a domain which
corresponded to the registered trademark of one of our clients. He wasn't
using the domain, hadn't used it in two years... yet our offer to purchase
the name from him was met with similar threats to call for a net-wide
boycott of us and our client... sheesh!

In the past, we've had success with mail lists by sending some variety of
the following to people who register:

"From time to time, you may receive email messages from us or our clients
which we feel may be important to subscribers to this service. At no time
will we offer your email address to anyone outside our firm. If you do not
wish to receive these messages, please send email with the subject heading
"no messages" to xxx_at_xxx.com."

We then append each message sent with the last two sentences.

Hope that helps!
