I think Bill is absolutely right on this point. If I'm working on some business
research I'll use a combination of known URLs, guessed URLs and search engines
to find the specific information I need. I generally won't bother stepping on
to hot links within corporate sites as I haven't got time to run down rabbit
holes. Occasionally I'll come across a site that has multi-listings which can
be quite useful. However, if I'm surfing in my own time I may jump around and
explore the net just for fun.

Extrapolating my personal behaviour to general web behaviour (dangerous ground
here) I am very reluctant to develop a lot of hot links from our corporate site
(targetted at business users) because I don't think that's what most commercial
visitors to our site want.

Marketing is about being very clear on your target audience and the message.
For a corporate web site targetted at business users the primary message is
related to that corporation. A softer sub-message can be related to helping
guide people to other sites but that will never be a primary concern.
