I find the biggest difficulty in working with VRML is the multitude of
different plugins available. They support one feature but not another, or
they support VRML 2 standard but VRML 1 or in the case of the Mac
environment, they are ultra buggy. How do you effectively do a plugin
detect routine that caters for the majority of these plugins without adding
3-4K of scripting to the page anyway ? Until there is more consistency
among the plugins available I'm not sure it will catch on. In the meantime,
we are using a detect for the Shockwave Plugin and giving a Flash based ad.
This leads to much less hassles than dealing with VRML and still provides
small file sizes for considerable content.
