Subject: building & construction
hi all,
I'm putting together a brief report on web advertising/marketing
opportunities for the building industry in South Africa. This
involves a list of the major information resources (tenders, govt
departments, universities, etc.), details on appropriate publishers,
and case examples. I'm wanting to provide some details on the
international building market on the net, particularly interesting
resources and good case examples, both as general info and also to
make comparisons with the local market. If anybody has experience in
this market I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/pointers to
relevant sites. I'd be happy to put together a summary of the info
gathered and make it available to anyone on the list who wants it.
The SA market being rather small, I've only found
one publisher who appears to deliver enough services to attract (or
have the potential to attract) the building industry. see them at:

Many thanks,
Frank Boermeester

Subject: Order Software
We have been using a proprietary order entry software package that we wrote
to enter orders that come in from our print and Internet advertising. We
would like to upgrade to a better package, perhaps a standard "commercial
package".
Is anyone aware of a package that could handle simple order entry of name
and address, item number and ad key code? The package would then have to
select labels by date/batch for our warehouse to fulfill orders and generate
reports to show ad responses and inventory.
Fairly simple. The key is to enter the orders quickly on one screen.
Thank you!

Subject: looking for a columnist - min's New Media Report
Hi all -
I'm looking for a monthly columnist to contribute a 700-800 word
article to my trade newsletter, min's New Media Report. The
publication is read by upper-level execs (VPs, CEOs, etc.) in the
online publishing industry, particularly from magazine, newspaper
and broadcast companies. The publication has a very how-to, tips
and strategies bent.
I'm looking for someone from the advertiser or agency side who
can offer ideas about ways publishers can interest advertisers in
their online properties. Though many of my readers are from large,
established companies such as Time Inc., MSNBC, etc., and have
major advertisers on their sites, they still feel that Madison Ave.
"doesn't get it" (to quote one exec.). I think this applies to all
levels of online publishers.
What are advertisers looking to accomplish from their online
media buys? Which pricing methods should publishers offer? What's
the best way to pitch a site to advertisers and agencies? And once
you've interested them, how do you keep them coming back?
These are the issues I'm looking to be covered in the column,
which needs to be written with plenty of strategic advice.
Anyone out there interested? Please respond to
rrunett_at_phillips.com so we can talk about the column.
Thanks,
Rob Runett

Subject: Upscale auction ad placement
I've been reading o-a for months as a tutorial for eventual ads on my
little-bitty New Orleans music site, but now I need some help for an
unrelated client job ... hope this request is appropriate here.
My client is a very upscale arts and antiques purveyor in New Orleans
who wishes to conduct a "best-offer sale" on their site when it launches
this fall. They'll offer 30 items per month in the range of
$50-$10,000, with online bidding and sales awarded at the end of each
month. (They're very reputable here in town, been in business for
generations.) They want to do banners ads on sites with a complementary
audience.
Not being very familiar with ad placement, I checked the obvious
preferable sites -- Virtual Vineyards, Re/Max Real Estate, etc. -- only
to discover they don't accept ads.
If any of you have appropriate sites for placement of their banners, I'd
love to hear from you. I've prepared them to pay about $30cpm, and am
amenable to equitably dividing up any placement fees.

From: Robert Grosshandler <rob_at_eyegive.com>
Subject: home pages for favorite nonprofit.
Hi - a reasonably long time lurker delurks, and hopefully for a good
reason.
There have been many posts here about targeting, types of ads, and consumer
willingness to accept advertising.
>From our perspective, those ideas that eventually make the Internet a
commercial success will be those that take advantage of its unique
characteristics.
I'd like to offer up an example of an approach that blends interactivity,
consumer participation, full-page impact, accountability, efficiency, and
perhaps best of all, social responsibility. Besides, it'll be a nice
change from discussions about spam and responsible e-mailing.
We're creating personalized home pages for folks who wish to use the Web to
do good for their favorite nonprofit. These pages consists primarily of
advertising (full-page, interactive, attractive ads) that are targeted to
each member's expressed preferences and demographics. Over half of our
revenue goes to our members' favorite nonprofits (not a list of our choo
sing, but EACH member's own favorite).
We're blending aspects of direct mail ( a high degree of control over the
type of recipient ) with extreme efficiency - what we call Guaranteed
Impressions. Advertisers don't pay unless our members actually see their
ads, as confirmed by the member.
We tested the concept early this year, put up the current site August 1,
and started accepting members and paying sponsor September 1. Since one of
the greatest attributes ot this medium is the ease of feedback, we're
looking for that feedback. Part of our mission states that we help our
members help others. Now, we'd like your help in that. Visit us at
http://www.eyegive.com, and send on your comments.

From: Mike Pooler <pooler_at_pcgame.com>
Subject: One million pageviews & still clueless!
I have some difficult questions:
Has this group come to any kind of general consensus on the best way to go
if you're an independent site with about 1 million
pageviews per month, and limited success in marketing ad space yourself?
I'm aware of Doubleclick (who I'm now applying to), of Web Rep (who I'm
talking to), and FlyCast, (who I'm still learning about). What *other*
options are there. Are there other agencies that will represent me, if I am
able to provide my own technology for serving and tracking the ads?
Can anyone suggest a source of financing for bringing our sites to the next
level? I'm interested in a business partner, an investor, or a venture
capitalist, but am rather intimidated by the whole world of business and
finance. Where can I begin to look, and how can someone like me who is not
experienced in business create a compelling business plan? Is it possible
for me to meet someone who can take charge of the business end, including
creating the plan and helping to secure financing?
While I'm looking for ideas and referrals, I do realize that some readers
of this list may be interested in getting directly involved. Without
turning this into a solicitation, I'd like to refer interested parties to
our media kit: http://www.fungame.com/media/
Also, let me characterize my situation this way: I'm an inventor, designer,
and ex-programmer. I don't know how to make business connections, or how to
frame an idea, even one that's working, in terms that can attract money.
There's a wide gulf that needs to be leaped. "Yahoo" got its first
financing from someone who saw that its inventors had the right stuff, even
if they were not able to make a presentation or business plan, and those
steps were skipped. I don't expect to get that lucky, but I'm going to have
to find some way to bridge the same gap. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike Pooler
