In a recent post, Kris brought up commission-based sites, and Adam threw in
some well thought out opinions. And, Mark Welch brought up the topic of
targeted advertising. I'd like respond to both in one shot:
At eyegive, we believe both are possible - that is, we're providing
targeted advertsing opportunities, targeting that includes demographic as
well as psychographic information AND we will be providing commission-based
sales opportunities. The key to both is building member participation, and
providing a trustworthy vehicle.
The eyegive model started out EXACTLY as Mark would like - as an ad
network. We determined that the cost to pull it off didn't justify the
risks at this time, but there is nothing basically wrong with that model.
He even identified the key element - individual participation. He missed
the need to give a reason for individuals to tell the truth.
I do worry about the second part of his desire - the desire to be able to
do a small buy (possibly through a credit card). The transaction cost
could be considerable for small buys, since there is no hope of a large
buy, the network might not be interested in "eating" the cost. But, he is
definitely on the right track.
Since our desire was to figure out a way to do good via the 'Net, we
decided to let that be the driving force. That then leads us to the next
area we're tackling - commission-based sales. We pass the commission on to
our members' favorite nonprofits. We amass our members in order to do
good. Merchants who wish to sell to them agree to provide the accounting
necessary to allow us to do that. Everybody wins.
Hope this helps.
