Randy,

You make some very valid comments, but as a search engine placement
provider, I feel it is important for me to step up and protect my
profession against generalization:

I get the impression from your posting that you don't feel valuable content
and search engine placement techniques can co-exist. I'm sure that's not
what you meant, but that was the impression I got. The fact is, they can
and usually do. I network with a lot of other search engine placement
specialists, and it is very rare to find one with a bad site. I know that
sounds unlikely, as there are a lot of bad sites out there, but it is true.
People who know how to work the SE's are usually very accomplished
designers and content providers. The guys with the bad sites don't usually
jump right into search engine placement. Frankly, the nuances of it are
way over their heads. Take the initial poster of this thread for example,
I checked out the link and his site is fantastic!

I also don't agree that great content breeds great traffic. In "the old
days" that was true. Word of mouth worked. Now, however, it is a
different story. In addition to the gazzillions of garbage sites out
there, there are also a lot that are stuffed full of great content. It
comes down to a matter of competition. Either you are going to get the
traffic, or they are. If your competitors are kicking your butt by working
the SE's, you almost have to do the same to play defense.

It's also important to understand that the search engines are filled with
garbage. Search for anything on AltaVista, and you can't count the number
of dead links, or links to WWWBoard messages fast enough. The key
ingredient to search engine placement is making sure the content is
relative to the key search term you are "working." If you sell gasoline,
and are working the terms "financial data," you are definitely in the
wrong. However, if you are selling financial data, and other sites are
doing better, you have every right to alter things within your page (metas,
title tags, keyword density, etc.) to boost your ratings.

Finally, I think there is a fine like between what is considered a "cheat"
and what is a legitimate search engine placement technique. I understand
how you feel the "popularity service" might be questionable. I won't
comment on it, as I'm too new to this list to make enemies on either side
of the fence. However, it's important to understand that not all search
engine placement techniques fall into the same category.
