At an extremely high level, I would continue to stand behind my point
(to clarify my credibility, my job is to research and visionize at
MatchLogic, not just serve ads).
To Tom's (BeFree) point, I did not say MatchLogic could function as a
commerce system (Tom, you're putting words in my mouth - I didn't even
mention MatchLogic. Are you trying to get me in trouble? ;-). Nor did I
say it was easy. Hell, as we all know, serving ads or managing commerce
all their own isn't something anyone can do in their sleep.
My statement is simply that the functionality (at the highest and most
simplified level) is extremely similar between content, commerce and ad
solutions. MY vision for the practicality of an all-encompassing
marketing suite is far in the future - perhaps 5 or 10 years.
So, today BeFree couldn't do it. Without knowing the finer details of
ANY systems, I hardly think anyone's system could do it. But work with
my vision here - there are only so many transactions one can track and
ads one can serve.
And frankly, what it all comes down to is results. Content is served (To
my point, I noticed BeFree discontinued their content syndication
service - a natural extension of their system no doubt, to which I
suspect offered little revenue in the market at this time). Ads are
served with content (So you don't serve the ads - BFIT is already an ad
targeting and tracking solution, that's a start). Ads influence
awareness, interest, desire and ultimately action. And action is
transaction - commerce. The food chain is there.
And to David Fox's original question that started this string -
obviously I am not the only one who sees the similarities between these
solutions. For instance, with BeFree -
- Targeting - Ads get targeted, so does BeFree
- Serving - Ads get served, so does BeFree
Woe is me - this is an ad list talking about commerce. Maybe I've just
been in this industry too long. ;-)
