I wouldn't write FlyCast off - I think they've been doing a
remarkable job addressing their recent problems. From a
business perspective, having to address performance problems
that are the result of increased demand is the best type of
problem to have!
I don't think that the problems we've seen of late from
FlyCast were Rich Media related. We have implemented Rich
Media for IE only on our site and the results have been just
fine.
FlyCast has done a tremendous job filling inventory - over
the past few months they have been providing paid ads for as
much as 90% of the inventory that I make available to them.
My experience to date with running my own banner management
software has been quite negative. I would much rather let a
professional 3rd party organization like FlyCast handle
this. Remember, they handle collections, payments,
hardware, connectivity, etc. Imagine the overhead you would
have to take on chasing down scores of $5.00 checks from
each of the smaller advertisers that FlyCast sells to every
month.
This type of service is so valuable to a small site like
mine where there is no sales staff and infrastructure
investment has been minimal. If a big targeted buy came my
way tomorrow, I would probably have them buy me through
FlyCast - the commission paid would be worth the time and
effort saved not managing the banners myself.
