You are implicitly classifying companies like Amazon and
CDNow with scam-artists (e.g. apparently Spree). The former
have clear payment policies and live up to them on penalty
of legal action (they have deep pockets). The later are
commiting fraud (and are, perhaps, judgement proof). You
may not like the payment policies of the Amazon or CDNow
affiliate programs, but it is extreme to say they are a
"total scam."

We will soon be launching Shop.Com. Shop.Com is a shopping
directory service which earns its revenue from (among other
things) delivering users to sites with affiliate programs.
Even pre-launch, revenue from affiliate programs already
covers the operating costs of the site.

That being said, some affiliate programs and vendors perform
better than others. If there is interest, I will post
periodic reviews of our experiences with them.

It is a matter of efficiency. We didn't pay for an ad sales
force and our vendors didn't pay for up-front marketing. As
we accumulate data about which programs pay better, we will
cull the ones that underperform. I am not saying that we
are uninterested in up-front revenue, just that we are
uninterested in the associated transaction costs.

PS If anyone here has interesting promotion ideas for
Shop.Com or has a site which they think belongs on Shop.Com,
please email me.
