I'm not saying that anyone here is crying sour grapes (well
some may be), but why don't we all admit that it's an
ingenious marketing tactic that is working very well and
provides value to both parties. Far too many abuse this
tactic and I know that's what this conversation is about,
but the few that are reputable deserve recognition for what
they've accomplished. This talk about Amazon and CDNow
being either profitable OR scams is nonsense. I don't think
either one of them are profitable or scams, but they do
provide value. A few cases in point.

My songwriter site, Lyrical Line, is the largest songwriting
resource online and it got that way in a single year. I do
this by providing the best of everything related to
songwriting. One of those elements is a bookstore so
songwriters don't have to sift through endless links of bad,
outdated books on the Amazon.com site. They come to my
store and get right down to business.

One of our clients' sites, Bell Geospace, provides 3D FTG
analysis and has a bookstore on oil exploration and all the
techie stuff. Knowing WHAT to search on is the key to
finding those books and this site provides value by making
this process simple.

In both cases, there is value to both parties. Visitors
come back for a great site that cuts to the chase and
Amazon.com benifits from the sale. Of course I won't say
that I wouldn't like to receive more from Amazon.com, but
that's not the point of my bookstore. My bookstore is just
one more element of the site that convinces my visitors to
come back. The change I get from Amazon.com buys me a bag
of candy corns and a coke...
