Spam is a very serious issue, and I will probably get some flames for
this post. I am very concerned about the "tips that Andrea received.

<To prevent future flames/negative publicity, here
are <a few basic tips:

<- do not publish URL's (especially to big commercial
<sites) in newsgroups, regardless of how relevent
they <may seem
<- do not mail webmasters, suggesting they link to
your <site from theirs

First, publishing a relevant url is acceptable and desirable. Multiple
posts to multiple sites is not.

Second, Webmasters like to get E-mail. that is why they put a mailto
link on their site. I am receptive to exchanging links from emails that
I receive from my mailto link. I ignore all emails that are sent as a
mass mailing. (yes spammers are getting good at making spam look like
good mail) If the E-mail is sent to me I read it. If it is sent to a
list (other than one that I subscribe to) I read it and call the 800
number if it exists to tell them that they should not send spam on their
dime. You should maintain a list of webmasters that give you permission
to contact them regarding reciprocal links and mail to them. The mass
E-mailer should give their URL and a reachable return address when they
send a message that may appear to be a spam. The diligent webmasters
can and will track them down. Besides, who would want to do business
with someone that wonít even give a return address.
