I avoid newsgroups in favor of moderated lists such as these. I find that
newsgroups often contain militant radicals that love to hear themselves
complain about every trivial plug as though it was a personal insult. In a
list such as this the moderator can often remove the plug but retain the
substance, thus it achieves the intent of the post without the backlash
from the minorities. Even then, URL's had better be presented not as a
plug but rather as content germane to the topic.

This is actually why I responded. Over the past year I have sent out
hundreds of inquiries suggesting my site as a resource in the area of web
promotion advice, usually to colleagues and sites that demonstrate a
serious intent to offer such links as a real service to their visitors. I
have NEVER had a link suggestion backfire. Sure, some do not respond, but
most consider my site relevant and thank me for the suggestion. If my site
was off the wall and did not offer great content, then I imagine that I
would get hate mail, but that has never happened. In the last three
months I have added about 60 reciprocal links, with zero complaints. I say
go for it.
