News groups each have their own set of rules. The owners are entitled to
set the rules and to expect people to obey them, but personally I do not
support terrorist tactics to enforce the rules.
However, you should always be sensitive of the issues involved and find
out what the rules are, and abide by them, before posting. The best way,
in my view, of getting the best out of news groups and list promotion,
is to make a valuable contribution to a discussion _before_ making any
attempt to promote, then only within the rules of the group. Many news
groups have "No-URL" rules simply because they are abused so much.
If you always expect something for nothing you will often find it
backfires. And there are also genuine mistakes of course. My advice is
to set up a second email account and configure you mail client, or a
second mail client, with the second email address and a false name. That
way if you do upset someone by mistake, it limits the damage.
But you should also adopt a professional approach to online promotion
which means, among other things, not "spamming". It can be done very
effectively, using an ethical and professional approach. There is
obviously a cost implication. You therefore need to decide if you want
to offer cheap mass-spamming services, or professional online promotion.
If you refuse to spam, you will lose clients, but if you do the job
properly you ought to be able to command a premium.
