TREKNEWS.COM just started to sell advertising space on several Star
Trek-related internet mailing lists, and, like so many other sites, it
was a shot in the dark what we should charge. I ended up deciding that
we'd charge 1/2 cent per message for the smallest ad buy (1,000 messages,
or $5), down to as little as 1/4 cent if the advertiser bought 50,000
messages ($150).
Now, this seems like a really small amount, but if you do the math, it's
not bad. For instance, one of the mailing lists we sell ads on has
roughly 300 members, and there's roughly 150 messages each day. That's
45,000 adviews each day - so this mailing list has the potential to make
about $150 a day. So far, this hasn't happened - but the potential is
there.
The thing you really have to consider is this: how much does it cost you
to run your mailing list? In our case, the mailing lists only cost $25
per month, and there's no per message costs. However, on some servers,
mailing lists cost a great deal more. You need to price your mailing list
advertising to exceed your costs. In a lot of cases, I'd recommend trying
to work out a flat-rate underwriting deal - your advertiser, instead of
paying per message or per recipient or per adview instead pays your
expenses, flat-rate, every month.
To be honest, I did some research prior to setting the ad rates for these
mailing lists. Some mailing lists charge more, some charge less - but it
seemed to me that the numbers I picked were fairly common given the
subject matter and the number of subscribers on the lists.
Take care,
Jason Ellis
