Hello everyone. I am new to the list so take it easy on me.

Designers for standard banner ads seem to be charging between $40 and
$75 per hour as a base, while rich media can be anywhere between $75 and
$150 per but rates can and do fluctuate depending on the amount of
exposure the work will be receiving. You definately pay more for higher
quality.

I would probably charge between $800 and $1000 per Shockwave banner. I
am personally more in favor of Shockwave and/or Shockwave Flash than
Java or any of the other rich media options for this particular
application.

With most of these mediums you have the ability to control how the
object loads (i.e. what part of the object plays while other back-end
frames load) and therefore you have very good control over what the
viewer sees, and when they see it. Imagine having a very small (2 or 3k)
loop to grab the viewers attention for the first one or two seconds
(allowing the rest of the animation to load) and after that have a short
movie. This is possible with Shockwave and, in my oppinion it would be
much more effective than a 6-8 frame, 3 color animated gif (which is
about the maximum, maybe even a bit to much for a banner ad).
The biggest problem with all of these rich media applications is not
bandwidth (with the loading control capabilities you can control and
manage the bandwidth problem), it is whether the user has the proper
browser and/or plug-in capabilities. One way around that is setting up a
script to check user capabilties, but that may shrink your audience more
than you would like.

I think the most important thing to consider is the design of the
banner. A solidly designed static banner will garner better results than
a poorly done rich media banner.
