I have followed this list with great interest for quite
some time and have been fascinated by the discussions that
go on and by the exchange of ideas.
One of the more interesting subjects to me, that I have
seen discussed here a few rare times, has been the valuation
of existing web sites and the many factors that need to be
considered. Although this may seem like a trivial subject
today, it will become more important as the Internet grows
and matures and buying and selling existing web sites becomes
a common place occurrence.
We all have seen some of the larger web sites being acquired
by other larger companies and sites (i.e. Microsoft's purchase
of Hotmail, Lycos' purchase of Tripod and Yahoo's recent
investment in GeoCities and acquisition of Four11). This
trend is beginning to trickle down to smaller sites acquiring
other small to medium size web sites and building a web based
network of sites (not unlike what happened with the cable
industry years ago).
I am in the process of writing a very lengthy article on the
valuation of existing web sites as part of a new site I have
created ( http://www.websitebroker.com/ ) dealing with the buying
and selling of existing web sites. I have put up the first draft
of the article, which is about 10 pages so far, in order to get
some feedback from the members of this list. The article contains
some very useful and interesting information, although it is far
from finished. The article can be found at:
http://www.websitebroker.com/valuation.html .
I would love to hear from other site owners about what they think
should be considered when determining the real value of a
web site. If, for example, you were to sell your web site today,
what one feature would you want to make sure is accounted for and
used to increase the value of the transaction? Is it your type of
traffic, your amount of traffic, the income you generate, your
future potential, your software.... or is it something else that
creates the value of your site?
I would also appreciate some feedback as to the whole concept of
the purchase and sale of existing web sites. Any additional resources
and links about the subject would be very helpful, since you will
notice that there is just not much else dealing with the subject out
there. Feel free to reply to me personally.
TIA
