I really don't think so. Anyone can start a search engine company.
Indeed, there are plenty of them now: Hotbot, AltaVista, WebCrawler,
Lycos, InfoSeek, etc.
Admittely if you confine the question to directory-style engines, they
stand virtually alone, but there are plenty of industry-specific
directories available.
Their brand name makes people want to visit them, but I don't think
there's anything intrinsically unfair about the situation. It's not
like "everyone uses Microsoft products, therefore you have to buy
Microsoft even if you hate the company". If, for some reason, you
hated yahoo (and I don't see any particular reason to do so), you can
always not visit their site and not register yourself in their index.
