When writing about search engines Don pointed out a very important fact.

This was the same feeling we had a year and a half ago when we started
Mamma. It (http://www.mamma.com) started out as a meta search engine site
with no graphics whatsoever. While we have come along with some of the same
tricks Don talks about (and I agree on the direction these sites are
going), we always kept true to our philosophy. The results of searches come
in as soon as they are parsed. We are always trying to be a user conscious
site... it's very hard when your after ad dollars.

I think it's an interesting point, every day we get letters from users
telling how much they like the no frills quick searching. But I think it's
a matter of choice Don, we reach out best to users who are very sensitive
to the "sublime". Others may not be as sensitive... and I doubt that most
people will leave television or the most popular Web sites. It's a certain
type of person, I almost like to look at it as a niche market. In fact, our
user surveys actually point to some interesting user traits among those who
will ONLY use Mamma (This means they are not using the big name sites). We
know for example that our most loyal users are technically inclined and
have been on the Internet for a few years now, we also know that they spend
less time on the Web then our other self labeled groups of users... my own
conclusion is that utility and integrity comes first for these people
(indeed they do not like to feel "Stupid").
