You mention surveys, demographics and auditing, this response assumes you
need an actual audit, something which may or may not be true depending on
the requirements you are trying to satisfy...
I am currently revising and updating a presentation on the topic of
internet auditing, which I will present at WEB ADVERTISING 98 (Feb 2-4 -
NYC). http://www.thunderlizard.com In the process of researching the
topic, I have found a wide disparity of definitions of the term "audit", a
wide variation in the range of methodologies, and a good deal of
controversy as to what and how one can audit given the unique character of
the web - take media measurement and multiply its difficulties by adding
the problem of "true third party verification" and you get the tricky
issues of auditing.
I would be happy to share my presentation-in-progress with anyone
interested on this list, and would welcome feedback. I would welcome also
questions regarding auditing which are most on people's minds, which you
feel should be covered in any discussion of the topic of auditing. To
answer Kathy's question here, I would recommend speaking with Peter Black
at BPA International http://www.bpai.com/ - they have a long track record
of auditing business publication (in print) and web sites, and can include
user database audits along with site traffic audits, depending on if and
how you capture various kinds of user stats. Also well worth looking into
are ABC and I/PRO - those three taken together have until recently been the
ones most commonly cited, though there are certainly others. Hope this
helps.
