I think that we need to segment the discussionary mindset
of online advertising, etc. Online advertising encompasses
email, WEB sites, chat and traditional media (to some
degree).
Posting banners on a WEB site is great, but what about
capitalizing on those who may not want to come to your web
site everyday - create an ezine. I subscribe to many
ezines and find them better than loading up a browswer and
printing or viewing the content online.
(Digression: ANY data on the residual marketing that comes
from users PRINTING OUT WEB PAGES, and the banners and ads
that are displayed to others via the hard copy?)
An ezine enforces brand awarness also. True, no color, and
moving Java scripts, but the message is thre none the
less.
What about setting up chat sesssions for users or
sponsoring someone else? This is a hot area on AOL.
Eyballs stay there for a long time - depending on the
subjet.
I listen to www.broadcast.com - each broadcast has an ad
before it (few seconds) and this is also reinforcing,
branding, advertisement, etc.
We can't forget traditional media, with this increase in
online/internet usage there is a host of magazines and
other traditioanl media writing about, analyzing and
reporting on this also. Advertising in this media will
reach the WEB users also (even those who read primarily
but don't go to a WEB site).
