ONLINE-ADS>> CyberThrill Casino pay-per-click advertising

Over the past several months, I have received
more email about CyberThrill than about any
other online advertising business. The company
operates an "online casino" using a mailing
address in the Bahamas but with offices in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada (tel. 514-931-2572).

At one time, inbound email about CyberThrill
was mixed: I received some reports that the firm
paid sites money owed (though most reports said
payment was always late). Others claimed to
have earned money and not been paid. Still
others reported receiving small payments, but
then said that when they released more banner
inventory to CyberThrill and generated much
larger earnings, the payment stopped. And of
course, many web publishers wrote asking me
for my opinion of the company.

The tone of the email has changed: now all I get
are complaints that CyberThrill is not paying
its affiliates at all. When I called, I got the firm's
answering machine.

Earlier this month, Forbes Digital Tool published
an article about internet gambling, and included
CyberThrill as one company that consumers were
having trouble with. That was apparently the
beginning of the end for this scheme.

But I don't understand why. Here was a company
offering to buy banner ad inventory from absolutely
any site at 20 cents per click. Sites that had been
expelled or rejected by every other vendor were
accepted. Who could believe that this was legitimate?
I think most web sites that signed up knew that this
was going to be a short ride, and just hoped to cash
in before the collapse. After all, many webmasters
wrote to me stating their understanding that online
gambling is probably illegal, but they wanted to cash
in on it anyway. (Which makes me wonder why no
vendors are offering a pay-per-click or commission
campaign for selling prescription medications or
illegal drugs.)

In any event, I wanted to post this just to let folks
know that it appears that the time has come: if you
have been carrying CyberThrill banners, you should
probably start scrambling to look for another paid
advertiser. (Of course, if anyone out there is getting
paid by CyberThrill, or has new contact information
so I can get some feedback from the company, please
let me know!)
