I'd like to throw a twist into this discussion on targeting, if I might:

I'm a little surprised that there has been no attention given in this
thread to the Platform for Privacy Preferences currently under
consideration by the W3C. the P3P will allow users to provide a range of
personal data in their browsers and then release it to site on a
case-by-case basis, exactly as described by Mark.

Check the news story _at_ http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,22289,00.html. It
just seems that the solutions involved in this development, by minimizing
the "fib rate" dramatically, will revolutionize our industry's targeting
practices and literally pole vault the Web to the next level of one-to-one
targeting. Opinions?
