I recently downloaded yahoo's buddy list (an ICQ style program) and was
blown away by the amount of data they wanted to gather. Birthdate. Address.
Income. about 25 questions in all.

My first thought was "ugh. this will take some time."
My second was "what are they going to do with this data?"
My Third was "Do I really want them to have this data?"

There was clearly zero tangible benefit to me giving them correct data.
just another faceless corporation trying to create a database.

Without making a benefit clear, we are relying on some innate desire for
users to provide information to you without having a clue why. Their
entire effort is now null and void as they create a giant database full of
crap.
