I did some checking on this with Debbie Williamson, who is Executive Editor
of The Industry Standard ( http://www.thestandard.net/ ). Back in the Fall
1996 Debbie was Interactive Editor at Ad Age and she did a story on the
history of online advertising. Here is what she wrote to me about Tom's
statement:

"rick often gets credit for being the first to sell banner
ads because he was the guy who sold a lot of them at
hotwired. and we all know that hotwired was a
groundbreaker in a lot of ways.

in fact, rick came on board hotwired in 1994 *after* the
ad format was "created" by other wiredlings. urban legend
is that a group of them decided to copy prodigy's banner
ad format on their web site, so the idea really started
back at prodigy. so was hotwired the first place you ever
saw banner ads? definitely not. was it the first
large-scale display of banner advertising? you bet."

Anyone heard another version of who invented the banner?
