Going back to Prodigy isn't quite far enough. In 1984, Times Mirror
launched its Gateway online service (then called videotex) in the Los
Angeles/Orange county area with more than $1 million in ad inventory sold.
I wasn't involved in the business before then, but I seem to remember that
some of the trials by companies like Time Warner prior 1984 sold ads (what
we'd call sponsorships today).

Where's Gary Arlen when you need him?
