Sometimes, especially during Argentina matches, its hard being English.
But when it comes to banners, I'll sing it loud. Teletext services in the
UK, where they were first deployed, have been running banners, text boxes
and other traffic-driving devices since their inception in 1973. The
BBC's service, Ceefax, couldn't sell them on a commercial basis on
account of the BBC's non-profit charter. But the ITV equivalent, called
Oracle, sold banners and still does to this day. Whilst I haven't seen a
copy of the original IO (yet), it seems the first flight of paid banners
on Oracle ran on 1 September 1981.

And let there be no complaints that banners ran on TVs only. PC users
were and still are able to receive those same online services.
