On the other hand, search engines such Yahoo, Lycos, Infoseek and Excite do is
require the development and continual improvement of sophisticated
software...That is something that requires much product development money,
as software engineers are expensive. But it would be interesting
to get the numbers for other types of sites.
Also, according to the reports that I have read, Zapata wants to
acquire or develop its own "portal" - it did make a bid for Excite !
The word "portal" is currently essentially associated with search
engines. That type of site would follow the pattern of the search
engines. So Zapata might not be nearly as nuts as you were suggesting...
