IMHO, which I admit comes from a writer/web designer and NOT an advertising
person, I have heard this type of line often from people who have no
content. There seems to have been this idea a few years ago that all you
need to do is "get a website" and you'll start making a ton of money. I
firmly believe that a good web strategy can be great for business, but too
often people have no real web strategy at all. A photographer friend of
mine, who has a poorly designed homepage on AOL filled with LinkExchange
banners, stolen clipart animations and every other cliche has recently told
me "It's inpossible for anyone to find your site on the web, so it is
impossible to make any money on the web." Meanwhile, my magazine site
(staff of one, me) is getting a couple thousand hits a month shortly after
being launched and with absolutely, positively no promotion, why? Because
it has content. Translate that into the "big business" world in which most
of you operate and a site employing a few people, making deals with other
"content providers" and having a decent promotions budget could do very
very well.
